2013 Newbery Medal Winner!

Katherine Applegate. Katherine Applegate  — also known as the K. A. Applegate of Animorphs, a book series I devoured as a kid. I spent many many phone calls on the Barnes & Noble in Corpus Christi, Texas, checking to see if the newest book had arrived yet. Trust me — they came out monthly and the series has well over 40 books.

And now? Now she is THE Newbery Author of the year. Wow. I am incredibly pleased with this award.

I made a goal a couple of years ago to read all the Newbery Medal Winners, and doing that changed my perception of quality of children’s literature. I have enjoyed children’s literature my whole life, but it was the Newbery Medal year-point-five-long binge that really taught me what elements make quality children’s literature. I have a sky-high respect for the Newbery Awards — they encapsulate all that I find valuable in children’s lit.

Unnnnfortunately. All the libraries in my area — and I do mean ALL — have this book either checked out or on hold. Sigh. I don’t want to wait that long. And asking for it for my birthday means the book is still a week away longer than I want it to be. So, I’m sorry Dan; I know you covet the “best present of  the [holiday] award,” but I’m going to have to give this one to myself. Happy early birthday to me with Amazon and two-day shipping!

I was just wondering if you follow the Caldecott winners as well. It’s strictly for picture books but the list includes some real gems, if you like children’s lit. Some of my favorites include Who Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus and Zen Shorts. 🙂
